We are meeting indoors, with windows open and fans on (the ventilation levels are good, and typically remain at or under 600 on the Aranet C02 monitor.) N95 singers’ masks are provided for all who want them but are not currently required; tests are also available and recommended for those who unmask but that is also not required. We ask that all attend be mindful of what you’re bringing into the space, and do your part to protect your community members with your choices. Thanks too, for flexibility when we have to change these policies.

This Session, we are introducing Grace Notes!
grace note, /ˈɡrās ˌnōt/, noun: a musical note added as an instrument; a small addition or embellishment

We’ve seen that our community really thrives in the relaxed, casual singing environment of the “living room.” Easy-to-enter songs allow us to feel relaxed as we sing together, without the stress of musical perfection. At the same time, we have also seen how much joy and excitement happens in the group when more intricate music comes together strongly, and that some of our singers really thrive the most while working on more complex music.

Thus, the concept of Grace Notes was born! (This will be our first year trying it out this way, although in some ways it will be similar to the small-groups we’ve offered before outside of rehearsal time.)

Grace Notes will meet for 40 minutes before the larger Living Room Choir, working on more complex pieces, and the more challenging sections of the larger-group’s songs. This is a non-audition group: all established members of Living Room Choir ANEW are welcome to also join Grace Notes, and new members will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Grace Notes is for you if you:

  • Are at a point where you’re ready to dive deeper into a musical challenge.
  • Are also attending Living Room Choir ANEW.
  • Are willing to put in time outside of rehearsals to familiarize yourself with the pieces and practice between weeks.
  • Will be a reliable attendee: if you do need to miss a week you will communicate with Kaitie and Sara, and do the work on your own time to stay caught up.
  • Are comfortable doing vocal warm ups and exercises to support your vocal instrument outside of group rehearsal time (as needed.)
  • Are interested in supporting the sound of the Living Room Choir as an anchor: someone who is confident in their singing part, reliable in attendance, and a friendly presence for newer or more shy singers to gravitate toward as they learn the song. (This may require moving to a different vocal part than you’re used to for certain songs.)
  • Are interested in the possibility of solos, duets and trios: you might even bring in a song you’re interested in working on with others! (Even if we can’t put the song into the choir repertoire right away, we’d still like to support Grace Notes members in singing small-project songs together.)
