Update for Tonight

Due to the winter cold that’s been going around, I’m going to sit out Te’s song circle tonight. It will still be happening though, and Te is a great songleader – so if you were planning on going, I recommend still going! She said to tell you she will be very excited to see you if you’re able to make it. (And we’re talking about co-leading sometime in January or February instead.)

See you then!

Songs of Strength in SF this Sunday!

Kaitie Ty  will be co-leading with Te Martin this coming Sunday:

Songs of Strength in San Francisco with Te Martin!

Sunday December 22, 5-7pm

Herchurch in San Francisco – click the link above to see map and more details!

Join us this month for a special song-circle co-led by Te Martin (Songs of Strength) & Kaitie Ty Warren (Living Room Choir).

We’ll teach simple, oral tradition songs, call-and-response style.

Come with your joy, come with your grief, come to share, come to listen, come to sing, come for calm. All are welcome. No singing experience necessary.

$5-15 donations welcome; no one turned away

This is an explicitly antiracist, queer-friendly, trans-affirming space. As we work to undo the structures white supremacy, POC, TRANS, & QUEER voices are welcomed and prioritized.

We acknowledge that this song circle is held on Rumaytush Ohlone land. 10% of all donations will go to the Shuumi Land Tax, supporting Segorea Te’ Land Trust, an urban, indigenous, women-led land trust in the east bay.

Te Martin believes that Song is a collaborator in healing earth and creating resilient communities. She has been leading community song circles for the past two years, is an organizer of the Thrive Street Choir, and recently completed an apprenticeship at Green Gulch Farm and Zen Center. Her music is available on SoundCloud.

Kaitie Ty Warren is passionate about waking people up to the joyful potential in their bodies, voices, and connections with others. Practicing harmony in music, Kaitie creates inclusive spaces to explore where harmony can be found in community as well. She teaches group speech classes for people with Parkinson’s; leads the Living Room Choir in El Cerrito; offers private lessons for all-things-voice; composes music and writes prose; performs and records; and is a member of the Ubuntu Choirs Network – an international community that believes it’s everybody’s birthright to sing. Recharge your Soul Batteries by Singing with Te Martin, Aaron Johnson, Deborah Leeds, and me! Plus, Fall Schedule Preview!

In this time of tremendous upheaval and uncertainty within our culture, it seems to be all the more important that we continue to gather as community, and sing. Much research has been done about the medical benefits of singing – and those benefits augment when singing in a group. Personally I have found singing in a group to be one of the most uplifting, healing, and healthy practices I have found on the planet. That’s no understatement.

We have some AMAZING guest and co-leaders coming up this month. This week I am out of town but choir sings on …

This Thursday, 8/8, we have Te Martin leading!

Theresa “Te” Martin believes that Song is a collaborator in healing earth and resisting empire. She lives on Coast Miwok land at Green Gulch Farm, is an organizer of the Thrive Street Choir, the Assistant Director of Music As Medicine Project, and a songleader at herchurch. She has been leading community song circles around the country for the past two years, is a bicycle enthusiast, and a lover of all things circus. Her music is available on SoundCloud.

The following Thursday, 8/15, we will have Deborah Leeds co-leading!
Deborah is a beloved and enthusiastic Living Room Choir member who over the years has deepened her involvement musically, even leading a song here and there for previous concerts. She recently completed a songleader’s training with the fabulous Heather Houston in Santa Cruz, and co-leading the Living Room Choir this month will be an opportunity to debut some of her newfound skills! We can’t wait to see (and hear) what she will bring.

Thursday 8/22 will feature Aaron Johnson as co-leader! Aaron Johnson is an earth builder, teacher of closeness, and activist, who has made a lifelong commitment to use the skills he possesses to end racism. In addition to using intimacy and closeness to blackness as a primary means to that end, the tools he frequently uses are speaking, teaching, singing, photography, filmmaking, and minimalism. Aaron leads a mentoring program called Turn It Up Now that focuses on elevating the power, talent, love, and work ethic of youth. He believes that deep connection is one of the most powerful tools one can use in dismantling racism. Visit his website for more.

And then, Thursday 8/29, it will be Kaitie Ty Warren (me) leading the Living Room Choir, before we take a short break and resume for our FALL SESSION!

Living Room Choir meetings happen on

  • Thursday Nights, 7-8:30pm
  • At the Grace Lutheran Church 15 Santa Fe Ave, El Cerrito CA (bordered by Kensington and Albany)
  • $30-20 sliding scale per drop-in
  • Please come scent-free
  • Invite your friends – no musical experience is necessary!
STAY TUNED for another email detailing the upcoming Fall Session!
Fall rehearsals happen mid-September through mid-December, following the same Thursday night schedule. It will culminate in a concert the weekend of December 14th.
I can’t wait to sing with you! Please tell anyone and everyone you know who you think needs more singing in their lives – they are welcome.
love and light,
Kaitie Ty

Evelie joins us tomorrow!

Original choir member Evelie Delfino Såles Posch will join us as co-leader tomorrow, Thursday 7/18! Evelie gave us some of our favorite songs during our very first session, and we’re excited to have her back for an evening, co-leading with Kaitie Ty Warren!

This week with Mark Growden!

Our guest co-leader this Thursday will be Mark Growden! Mark Growden is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, music educator, visual artist, and the founder and artistic director of SF SingFest, The Chromatic Community Music Center, The Calling All Choir, and The San Francisco Jaw Harp Choir. He has been facilitating community sings in North America and abroad for over 25 years. Mark has devoted his life to making music for other people and to helping other people make music for themselves.

The Living Room Choir (Drop-In evenings through the summer) are led by Kaitie Ty Warren, a community builder and song leader who is known for her playful and inclusive style.

Open to all, no auditions, community-focused and socially engaged, join us to sing through several songs per night in a call-and-response learning style after a short warm up. No need to bring anything except your capacity for exploration and joy!

We believe:
– singing is an essential human birthright and a powerful source of energy and connection
– singing together is a potent tool for building community
– singing in harmony teaches us to celebrate diversity and to practice deep listening

Our suggested sliding scale is $30-20 per evening; simply talk to us if money is a barrier and we will work it out. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds. Know that, by paying within the full sliding scale, you are contributing to everyone being there.
